Air Conditioning Basics
The four main components to your air conditioner are:
This is the outside unit. This is where the gas from the compressor is condensed into a liquid. The gas that enters the condenser is very hot. The temperature is then lowered so that the gas can convert back to a liquid.
This is inside the condenser. It circulates the pressurized refrigerant, to concentrates the heat and changes the low pressure gas to high pressure.
This is the part of the system that is inside the home. In simple language: it absorbs the heat from your home.
4. Expansion Valve
This controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.
All of these pieces are connected by a copper tube that handles refrigerant, creating the closed-loop. Heat is collected in the evaporator, sent outside to the condenser the heat is removed and the cool air is recirculated back into your home.
An Air Conditioner Doesn’t Create Cool Air
What happens in the process is actually the removal of heat from the air. Your AC uses a chemical called refrigerant to remove heat and transfer it outside. The warm air runs through the lines and coils in your unit and goes form liquid to gas and back again and in the is process the refrigerant removes the heat and transfers it elsewhere so that when the air comes out the other side it is cool.
Your AC Will Remove Humidity
Lower humidity helps the over all comfort level by making you feel cooler even if the temperature is the same.
Your Air Filter Needs to be Checked and Replaced Every 3-6 Months (depending on manufacturers recommendations)
A dirty air filter restricts your air flow which reduces efficiency, costing you money and over time can put stress on your unit and could cause a costly repair.
Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance
Your HVAC systems needs regular check ups to keep it running in tip top shape. Having regular annual preventative maintenance will bring you longer life and fewer breakdowns over all.
What is SEER?
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures air conditioning and heat pump cooling efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency. [Trane]

“Special thanks to the team at Chaves for wonderful service – from my initial call into the office to report AC issues during the heat wave, to the technician's articulate and pleasant nature during the repair. During a period of high call volume due to extreme heat it's easy to let stress impact your serviceability, but I experienced extreme professionalism and solid communication. Thanks for an all-around job well done.”

“We have two separate central A/C units serving our home. When one of the units failed two years ago we called a well respected local repair/installation HVAC company (not Chaves) who performed the repair (a dead capacitor).
Earlier this year Chaves was low bidder on a new furnace for our home and did a great job on the install on short notice, so when our other A/C unit suffered a similar failure (a dead capacitor) during the biggest heat wave in recent New England history we called Chaves. They fixed the problem within 24 hours despite the high demand for HVAC repairs during the heat wave and, most amazing, billed us two and a half times LESS than the company that repaired our other unit in 2016 for the identical problem!
Chaves should always be your first stop for HVAC issues – excellent techs, fast service and very fair pricing!”

“Ricky explained the new service plan and helped me choose the best one for my needs. He serviced both my gas forced-air heating system and my central AC system. A few things came up during the maintenance and he explained what needed to be done and why. He also answered a few questions for me. Ricky was knowledgeable, friendly, and very good at what he does!
I got calls to confirm the scheduled appointment and another call when the technician was on his way. I chose Chaves to replace both my furnace and central AC years ago and I've been using them for maintenance ever since. I'm very pleased with their service!”
– Caitlin B.
“I had an emergency with my air conditioner system, called the company they were fast and efficient to solve the problem. The company sent to my home a very experienced professional, who was patient to explain what was going on, how I could prevent that from happening again, and did a very careful and well done work.”
