Air Conditioning Basics

The four main components to your air conditioner are:

1. Condenser
This is the outside unit. This is where the gas from the compressor is condensed into a liquid. The gas that enters the condenser is very hot. The temperature is then lowered so that the gas can convert back to a liquid.

2. Compressor
This is inside the condenser. It circulates the pressurized refrigerant, to concentrates the heat and changes the low pressure gas to high pressure.

3. Evaporator
This is the part of the system that is inside the home. In simple language: it absorbs the heat from your home.

4. Expansion Valve
This controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.

All of these pieces are connected by a copper tube that handles refrigerant, creating the closed-loop. Heat is collected in the evaporator, sent outside to the condenser the heat is removed and the cool air is recirculated back into your home.

AC FAQ

An Air Conditioner Doesn’t Create Cool Air
What happens in the process is actually the removal of heat from the air. Your AC uses a chemical called refrigerant to remove heat and transfer it outside. The warm air runs through the lines and coils in your unit and goes form liquid to gas and back again and in the is process the refrigerant removes the heat and transfers it elsewhere so that when the air comes out the other side it is cool.

Your AC Will Remove Humidity
Lower humidity helps the over all comfort level by making you feel cooler even if the temperature is the same.

Your Air Filter Needs to be Checked and Replaced Every 3-6 Months (depending on manufacturers recommendations)
A dirty air filter restricts your air flow which reduces efficiency, costing you money and over time can put stress on your unit and could cause a costly repair.

Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance
Your HVAC systems needs regular check ups to keep it running in tip top shape. Having regular annual preventative maintenance will bring you longer life and fewer breakdowns over all.

What is SEER?
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures air conditioning and heat pump cooling efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency. [Trane]

“Called and got a service tech to come to my home within a few hours. I was impressed with the woman who answered the phone; she was very helpful and professional. She told me what to expect and that is exactly how things were done.
"Dan" the tech, arrived when expected. He diagnosed and completed the repair in less than 30 minutes.
He had us back in cool air so fast !!!”

– Sue F.

“Joe, meant to contact you earlier to let you know that we were pleased with the installation of the second story furnace and air conditioner. Your installation team was very nice and easy to have in the house (important), and the electrician and gas guys were also very nice. Actually, the electrician replaced a GFI box on the outside of the house without even saying anything about it. Apparently they found an issue with the box and went ahead and replaced!

Thanks very much for your attention and your company’s service! The AC is working well and we will assume that the furnace will too!

“I wanted to follow-up on an AC request I made a month or so back – we tried unsuccessfully to revive our old system and worked with several different companies to get the repairs and estimates, etc during the process. I won’t bash anybody on here of the companies that deserve a bit of bashing (!) but I will say that Chaves was FANTASTIC to work with – there’s a reason why their yard signs are all over town – they are prompt, courteous and efficient and knowledgeable. Joe Chaves came over several times during the process and was available via phone for any questions. He worked with us to figure out MassSave Rebates and explain his system recommendations thoroughly. I am impressed with their company and highly recommend Chaves for any AC work you might have!”

– Doreen N.

“Chaves HVAC was a strong referral from my prior company. As a first time customer they provided prompt and efficient response to repair my leaking AC. The tech had the expertise to identify the problem quickly, keeping me informed of what was needed and the cost. A very good first impression.”

– Ken B.

“Dave Piper came promptly and he very efficiently diagnosed the air conditioner problem as a dirty coil and burnt wire. Dave repaired the AC quickly and professionally. I give 5 stars for an excellent, highly competent Chaves employee, Dave Piper.

* I am a loyal Chaves customer since 2008″

– Colleen R.

“I just wanted to let you know how wonderful your service technicians were to me on Sunday. We had a frozen coil in the air handler in the attic and both technicians I talked with were extremely patient and helpful during our very stressful time.  I am very happy that we have Chaves to call on.
